The Bed Management Specialist - Registered Nurse (RN) coordinates internal, external and emergency admissions/transfers by receiving, processing, and documenting information required including medical diagnosis, type of bed required, admitting physician, type of surgery, demographics and any other relevant information needed to meet the needs of the patient upon reception to the unit.

Facilitates communication with various departments including surgery department, emergency department, nursing units, physician offices and/or outlying facilities to ensure appropriate placement of patients.

Collaborates with hospital leadership, medical leadership and staff to minimize delays and obstacles to bed assignment and to ensure patients are admitted to the most appropriate bed available.

Facilitates communications between receiving and referring physicians, other hospital staff, and transporting agencies. Arranges conference calls and gather necessary clinical information from the conversation and documents all required information pertaining to the patient transfer process into database. Assists contact with available services and available specialty care.

Confirms patient referral status by receiving patient information from physician. Categorizes patient's clinical requirements using established criteria for admissions and notify physicians when patient requirements do not meet criteria.

Communicates with physicians and outlying facilities if placement of a specific patient will be problematic. Collaborates with physicians and nursing units to determine the best course of action which will be satisfactory to the patient, physician, and hospital.

Education and/or Experience

Graduate of an accredited nursing program is required. Minimum three years of nursing experience in a medical/surgical and critical care setting required.

Bachelor's degree in Nursing preferred.

Registered Nurse with current Illinois License is required. BLS certification is required.
