Associate Veterinarian

TheChicago Zoological Society (CZS) is looking for an Associate Veterinarian tojoin a strong Veterinary Services team committed to providing the highestquality veterinary care. Since theopening of Brookfield Zoo in 1934, the Society has had an internationalreputation for cutting-edge animal care and wildlife conservation thatcontinues today. The mission of theChicago Zoological Society is to inspire conservation leadership by connectingpeople with wildlife and nature. CZS'team of 5 veterinarians (ACZM, ACVAA diplomates), 8 certified veterinarytechnicians, veterinary residents, and additional support staff provide care todiverse animal collection of over 500 species and 3,000 animals. The zoo supports a philosophy of proactive,preventative medical care combined with the highest level of care for ill animals. CZS is home to a 20,000 square foot hospitalfacility outfitted with the latest medical equipment including an in-hospitalCT scanner and comprehensive in-house clinical pathology laboratory. Department operations are well funded anddedicated capital funds provide for annual investment in new medicalequipment. The University of IllinoisZoological Pathology Program, consisting of 4 dedicated ACVP diplomats and 3residents, provides complete pathology service and offers many collaborativeopportunities.
CZSvalues active participation in professional organizations, applied clinicalresearch, scholarly activity, and participation in conservation programs. We place a high value on veterinaryeducation, maintaining close academic partnerships with the University ofIllinois, College of Veterinary Medicine. This position will have the ability to hold adjunct faculty appointmentwith the University and will be expected to provide outstanding mentorship and trainingof veterinary students and residents.
Theposition will play a key role within the Society's Center for the Science ofAnimal Care and Welfare, serving to develop and execute clinical researchprojects, as well as synergize with research projects underway in otherdepartments. The veterinary departmentis launching two new programs in 2016 that represent exciting new collaborativedirections and will bring on additional staff. A veterinary fellowship position for a post-residency anesthesiologisthas been added and will create research opportunities in anesthesia, analgesia,and pharmacology coupled with specialized training in non-domestic animalanesthesia. A veterinary radiologistwill also be joining our department to further advance medical diagnosticimaging programs at CZS and the broader zoo community.
Weare searching for an enthusiastic veterinarian who places a value on providingcompassionate clinical care, supporting the larger aims of the institution, andworking collaboratively with Animal Programs staff. We maintain a strong team-orientedenvironment and are a seeking a self-motivated person committed to excellenceand cooperative growth.

Position Requirements and Specifications

Doctorate
of Veterinary Medicine from an institution accredited or recognized by the
American Veterinary Medical Association and a minimum of three years of
post-graduate experience or training in zoo animal medicine. Aquatic and marine mammal (cetaceans)
experience a plus. Must hold a valid
state veterinary license, DEA controlled substance registration certificate,
and USDA/APHIS accreditation (if non-Illinois licensed, must become so within 6
months of hire). Board certification
with the American College of Zoological Medicine required upon hire or must be
obtained within four years of employment.

Must
have a demonstrated ability to represent the Society and the Animal Programs
Department before other zoos, conservation societies, professional and
educational organizations, the media, governmental agencies, and the public in
a well-informed, positive and responsive manner. Must possess strong communication and
interpersonal skills, a high level of energy, be self-motivated, and have a commitment
to excellence. Must have strong
organizational skills and an eye for detail and accuracy.

mso-bidi-language:AR-SA">Experience and/or ability to work and interact
effectively with a diverse, multicultural audience is required. Multilingual
ability preferred, Spanish fluency a plus.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office (PowerPoint, Word, Excel, Outlook)
required. Valid driver's license
required. Illinois residents must
possess a valid Illinois driver's license within 90 days of hire. Valid out-of-state license required for out-of-state
residents
