Equipment Mechanic II

The Morton Arboretum seeks an Equipment Mechanic to coordinate the maintenance program for the Arboretum's rolling fleet and grounds maintenance equipment.  Repair and maintain the rolling fleet and grounds maintenance equipment including all vehicles, construction equipment, mowers, small engines and power tools that are the property of The Morton Arboretum.

Qualifications:  Training in equipment maintenance, vocational or a technical school required.  Associate degree preferred.  5+ years experience in the field required.  Advanced mechanical skills and understanding of hydraulic and pneumatic systems required.  Ability to weld, paint, fabricate, and install parts required.  Ability to understand equipment operator manuals, operate every piece of Arboretum equipment, and instruct others required.  Ability to learn and use the existing work order software system required.  Must be able to obtain a Class A Commercial Driver’s License, which is subject to insurability and an annual Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) report.  Basic proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, Gmail, and other Google applications beneficial. 

Success Factors:  Ability to work effectively with persons internal and external to the Arboretum.  Ability to problem solve and prioritize.  Strong verbal and written communication skills.  Knowledge of OSHA, licensing requirements, vehicle operator requirements, and EPA requirements for fuel operators.

  • Physical Demands:  Requires significant amount of physical activity: limited lifting and carrying (up to 50 lbs.), bending, climbing (up to 5 ft.), pushing, pulling, standing, walking, kneeling, and traveling by vehicles. Vision in the normal visual range with or without correction.  Sense of touch and the ability to wear Personal Protective Equipment required.
  • Work Environment:  Work is performed in a combined indoor and outdoor setting.
  • Equipment:  Construction equipment, general auto mechanic equipment,production mowing equipment, snow removal equipment, truck, carts and other fleet vehicles, hand tools, welding and power tools, hoists, two-way radio, general office equipment.
  • Schedule:  May require some evening and weekend work during emergency situations.
