Director of Pharmacy

Position Summary:

The Director plans, organizes, directs, and controls the operations of the department of pharmacy in coordination with other departments and divisions, the medical staff, and administration.


  1. Plans for departmental needs relative to resources for the growth and development of pharmaceutical services.
  2. Develops and implements department philosophies, goals, policies and procedures that guide and support the provision of services. Develops programs to assure maintenance of current standards of pharmacy practice (including quality improvement and continuing education programs.
  3. Maintains a high level of current awareness in the field of pharmacy, especially in the area of institutional pharmacy practice.
  4. Schedules personnel, and is responsible for provoking appropriate staffing levels of qualified and competent individuals. Plans for and supports intra- and interdepartmental staff development activities. Prepares written performance evaluations for departmental staff and reviews each evaluation with the respective employee. Counsels employees, and initiates disciplinary action as necessary in accordance with the hospital's policies and procedures.
  5. Communicates hospital and departmental policies/procedures to the staff of the department, and implements all new/revised policies/procedures within the department
  6. Prepares the department's annual budget for operational expenses, payroll, capital equipment, and revenue. Controls utilization of departmental resources, ensures provision adequate to need, and operates the department within the approved budget.
  7. Establishes productive improvements in methods to maximize performance and utilization of resources, monitors the pharmacy environment relative to physical appearance, safety, and staff behavior, and develops standards for quality control of drugs, their selection, use, and storage.
  8. Maintains security standards for those areas under control of the pharmacy and establishes a climate for positive, supportive relationships within the department and the organization.
  9. Participates in community and professional organizations to promote effective relationships with other health and community organizations and to facilitate professional growth.
  10. Participates on medical and hospital committees as appointed and Risk Management program of the hospital.





Job Requirements
Minimum Requirements: 3-5 years of management experience in an acute care setting. Post Graduate Degree in Pharm D required. Pharm D. License required.
