Assistant Manager, Admissions

Since the opening of Brookfield Zoo in 1934, the Society has had an international reputation for taking a cutting-edge role in animal care and conservation of the natural world. The Society is an active partner in wildlife protection programs around the world, including the Sarasota Dolphin Research Program, the world's longest-running study of bottlenose dolphins. We have pioneered the field of conservation psychology, the study of how people connect with animals and nature. We are able to reach so many audiences each year, including 2 million zoo guests engaged by unique exhibits and programs; some 250,000 schoolchildren, campers, and families who participate in award-winning science education programs; nearly 24,000 teachers who take part in our professional development workshops; and, diverse communities across Chicagoland.

The Assistant Manager, Admissions assists in the management of the daily operations of admissions functions ensuring exceptional customer service to zoo guests and generating revenue to contribute to overall revenue goals and financial sustainability. You will also assist in training and supervising over 120 seasonal crew members ensuring all are scheduled for and attend customer service training; lead and improve Auxiliary Services department training; and provide constant observation, evaluation, retraining, coaching, recognition, and corrective action, as appropriate, following established guidelines. Making use of your prior supervisory experience, you will assist in the preparation of the department staffing plan and daily staffing schedules to support budgetary goals including scheduling for all Admissions locations and executing onsite operating adjustments as needed and assigning crew to assist in different areas. As Assistant Manager, Admissions, you will also perform daily management functions to ensure proper cash handling procedures, cash accounting, and system auditing in support of programs and procedures established in conjunction with the Cash Control, Accounting, and Public Safety Departments. Additionally, you will monitor the financial performance of locations and implement corrective action in controllable areas, such as labor, to maintain budgeted expenses and monitor crew to ensure accurate attendance information is obtained and established cash handling procedures are followed. You will also perform the General Manager's responsibilities during absence related to daily operations involving customer service, crew issues, and time sensitive decision making. Other responsibilities include (1) assisting in managing the Admissions point of sale system, (2) updating departmental procedures, (3) ensuring locations are stocked with necessary equipment and supplies, (4) performing inventories of needed ticket stock and supplies, (5) ensuring all location signs are correct and properly displayed, (6) and performing front-line functions as needed. You will also assure compliance with Society policies and departmental procedures, including Life Safety policies, Government Job Safety regulations, and pertinent labor laws.

Position Requirements and Specifications
The requirements for this position include:


  • Associate's Degree in Business Management or equivalent combination of relevant training and/or experience required.

  • Minimum two years supervisory experience required or equivalent combination of supervisory experience and direct front-line experience, with emphasis on cash handling and customer service.

  • Proficiency using Microsoft Windows Office Suite: Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint required.

  • Strong customer service orientation required.

  • Solid organization and communication skills required.

  • Experience training employees a plus.

  • Valid driver's license required. Illinois residents must possess a valid Illinois license within 90 days of hire. Valid out-of-state license required for out-of-state residents.

  • Experience and/or ability to work and interact effectively with a diverse, multicultural audience. Multilingual ability, Spanish fluency a plus.

  • Incumbent must have ability to work non-standard hours including evenings, holidays, and weekends. Work schedules are based on the needs of the operation and may be adjusted due to weather conditions.
This position requires a high level of customer service and the ability to operate a POS system accurately and efficiently. Admissions employees may be assigned to work the parking or admission booths, Guest Relations buildings, North and South Buggies and internal attraction ticket booths and/or access control areas. It may be necessary to board buses or walk traffic lanes in order to obtain attendance counts and/or collect parking fees. Admissions employees may also be required to temporarily assist at other Guest Services locations as directed, such as food service areas .
