Radio Technician

POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT

DuPage Public Safety Communications (DU-COMM) located in DuPage County Illinois, seeks a highly qualified and motivated person to fill the open position of Radio Technician. 

DU-COMM is a large consolidated public safety communications center in Illinois and currently serves forty-one (41) member agencies and over 800,000 residents in DuPage and neighboring counties.  DU-COMM receives requests for Police, Fire, and EMS via 45 incoming 9-1-1 lines.  DU-COMM processes over one (1) million phone calls each year, including over 300,000 9-1-1 calls, and over 550,000 calls for service.  DU-COMM has a staff of 99 and employs 68 full-time 9-1-1 Telecommunicators. The FYE 2015 budget is $13.7 million.

The primary responsibility of the Technician is to assist in the installation, maintenance, and repair of: radio frequency, telephone microwave, computerized control system, power, alarm, ancillary systems, and DU-COMM equipment and property.  Other duties include: troubleshoot radio and electronic systems, radio towers (receive and transmit sites) and systems, telephone systems, computer control systems, alarms, and mobile data terminals at DU-COMM and numerous other sites in DuPage County; act as the first echelon for evaluating building systems and determining steps within DU-COMM or with vendors to resolve issues; install and maintain computer software relevant to phones, console, and radio systems; install new equipment or system, as required; communicate with staff and member agencies regarding equipment or service problems.

Candidates should possess strong analytical, problem solving, mechanical aptitude, and communication skills as well as the ability to work one-on-one and in a group environment.  Candidates must have experience with a variety of technology and systems including, but not limited to: basic AC/DC electrical systems, electric circuit maintenance, telephone, microwave, and radio frequency.

Candidates must have trade certification or degree in electronics/computer technology, radio, microwave, or telephone; or a minimum of two (2) years experience in radio/microwave/telephone technical position.

Knowledge of public safety radio systems, including analog, digital, conventional, and trunking technologies is desirable.  Candidates should also possess knowledge of the latest operating systems (OS) and associated software packages. BA in engineering technology or related field preferred. FCC general class radio telephone license highly desirable. 

The Technician is required to be available for a 24-hour On Call 7 day rotation.  See Technician job description for minimum and preferred qualifications.  Residency within a reasonable distance of the facility is desirable.
