Associate Veterinarian (part-time)

The
Chicago Zoological Society (CZS) is looking for a part-time Associate
Veterinarian to join a strong Veterinary Services team on a permanent
basis. Since the opening of Brookfield
Zoo in 1934, the Society has had an international reputation for cutting-edge
animal care and wildlife conservation that continues today. The mission of the Chicago Zoological Society
is to inspire conservation leadership by connecting people with wildlife and
nature.

This
position will perform as a clinical veterinarian, reporting to the Vice
President of Clinical Medicine and providing care to a large and diverse animal
collection. The zoo supports a
philosophy of proactive, preventative medical care combined with the highest
level of care for ill animals. This
veterinarian will join an experienced team consisting of 3 clinical
veterinarians (ACZM, ACVAA diplomates), a veterinary resident, 7 certified
veterinary technicians, a hospital manager, and additional support staff. CZS is home to a 20,000 square foot hospital
facility outfitted with the latest medical equipment including an in-hospital
CT scanner and comprehensive in-house clinical pathology laboratory. Department operations are well funded and
dedicated capital funds provide for annual investment in new medical
equipment. The University of Illinois
Zoological Pathology Program, consisting of 4 dedicated ACVP diplomats and 3
residents, provides complete pathology service and offers many collaborative
opportunities.

The
institution and veterinary department value active participation in
professional organizations, applied clinical research, scholarly activity, and
participation in conservation programs.
We place a high value on veterinary education, maintaining close
academic partnerships with the University of Illinois, College of Veterinary
Medicine. This position will have the
ability to hold adjunct faculty appointment with the University and will
support veterinary student rotations and an ACZM compliant veterinary residency
program

We
are searching for a team oriented veterinarian who places a value on providing
compassionate clinical care, supporting the larger aims of the institution, and
working collaboratively with Animal Programs staff. This is a permanent, 50% full-time
equivalent, salaried position (20-25 hours a week) working on a flexible
schedule.

Position Requirements and Specifications

Doctorate
of Veterinary Medicine from an institution accredited or recognized by the American
Veterinary Medical Association and a minimum of three years of post-graduate
experience or training in zoo animal medicine.
Aquatic and marine mammal (cetaceans) experience a plus. Must hold a valid state veterinary license, DEA
controlled substance registration certificate, and USDA/APHIS accreditation (if
non-Illinois licensed, must become so within 6 months of hire). Board certification with the American College
of Zoological Medicine preferred.

Must
have a demonstrated ability to represent the Society and the Animal Programs
Department before other zoos, conservation societies, professional and
educational organizations, the media, governmental agencies, and the public in
a well-informed, positive and responsive manner. Must possess strong communication and
interpersonal skills, a high level of energy, be self-motivated, and have a
commitment to excellence. Must have
strong organizational skills and an eye for detail and accuracy.

Experience
and/or ability to work and interact effectively with a diverse, multicultural
audience is required. Multilingual ability preferred, Spanish fluency a
plus. Proficiency in Microsoft Office
(PowerPoint, Word, Excel, Outlook) required.
Valid driver's license required.
Illinois residents must possess a valid Illinois driver's license within
90 days of hire. Valid out-of-state
license required for out-of-state residents.
