Switch Technician

Responsibilities
  • The Technician-Switch is responsible for the advanced support, operation, administration and maintenance of a regional Mobile Switching Center (MSC), peripheral equipment associated with the Mobile Switching Center (MSC) and data network elements in the Verizon Wireless internal, commercial fixed and wireless networks. These network elements include, but are not limited to: Alcatel-Lucent switching complex, Tellabs DACs/echo cancellers, Comverse voice mail, Cisco switches routers, fiber muxes and sniffers and power distribution.
  • Other duties include coordinating installation, testing, and troubleshooting of transmission facilities (OC192, OC48 and ethernet backhaul).
  • The successful candidate must have a working knowledge of the OSI 7-layer model, TCP/IP, Ethernet, MAC addressing, trunking and routing protocols, access lists and subnetting and demonstrated knowledge of RIP, BGP, OSPF, HSRP, MPLS, VoIP, LAN/WAN protocols and use critical thinking skills to troubleshoot telecommunications or IP issues related to switching and routing from the cell site to the Evolved Packet Core (ePC) / Network Services Core (NSC) network, ensuring network integrity and quality.
  • Responsibilities include supporting, upgrading, administering and troubleshooting these platforms/protocols and MSC building environmental/mechanical systems in a multiple vendor environment.
  • The Technician-Switch is expected to perform his/her duties with minimum supervision, and participate in cross-functional projects as required. They are also responsible for updating daily logs with site-specific information and can compose clear and concise reports for system documentation.
  • This position is a rotating day shift and night shift position and will participate in an on-call rotation.


Qualifications
  • Minimum two years experience is required in two or more of the following fields: wireless telecommunications switching systems or data center environment, LAN/WAN operations, ethernet backhaul deployment, Juniper and/or Cisco switching and routing, or VoIP/SIP protocols. Cisco CCNA certification is preferred.
  • Minimum Associates degree, 2-year technical degree, relevant military experience, equivalent special electronics training, or equivalent work experience is required. Minimum 3 year experience plus electronics training in one or more of the following fields: telecommunications (cellular or landline) switching systems or experience inLAN/WAN operations and IP connectivity is preferred.
  • Intermediate training in at least 3 of the following areas: data communications, digital communications, operating systems and applications, telecommunications, computer support, project management, and/or power.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of computer systems, stored program control, and power is required.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of LAN/WAN protocols is required.
  • General knowledge in the use of electronic test equipment is required.
  • Experience and knowledge of transmission facilities (OC48, T3, T1, and DSO) is required.
  • Strong computer skills with emphasis on applications are required.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office and Outlook is required.
