Communications Specialist
NORTHERN ILLINOIS FOOD BANK
POSITION DESCRIPTION
JOB TITLE: Communications Specialist DATE: 10/13
DEPARTMENT: Philanthropy & Communications
REPORTS TO: Director of Communications
Purpose:
The Communications Specialist will administer communications policies and procedures that support the food bank’s brand, publicity and marketing efforts.
General Responsibilities:
- Serves as communications contact for donor-related publicity. Writes and posts press releases for donations, per the food bank’s donor benefits guidelines. Assists food team with developing donor recognition pieces, such as banners.
- Writes, rewrites, and compiles articles for general use, including creating stories for free publications.
- Writes for web as needed.
- Posts media releases to local news websites, as requested by communications manager and communications director.
- Updates fact sheets and brochures.
- Maintain a resource file for staff use of hunger-related stories, food bank stories and stories of our hungry neighbors.
- Oversees media clip file and creates monthly report on news coverage. Compiles and saves stories mentioning food bank. Creates a monthly summary of food bank coverage, including copies of key food bank stories to be distributed to staff monthly.
- Seeks speaking opportunities for the food bank.
- Manage county advocacy program.
- Manages off-site awareness events, such as festivals, and works with volunteer department to create a key volunteer data base for such events.
- Creates presentations for the communications department, and ensures presentation templates are updated semi-annually.
- Oversee logo and flyer approvals for the organization.
- Manage communication team calendar.
- Maintains the media contact list.
- Assist with managing production of communications pieces, including working with outside vendors to assure deadlines, budget and quality expectations are adhered to.
- Other duties as assigned.
Education/Skills/Experince:
- Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism or similar field.
- Strong writer, familiar with AP Style.
- Attention to detail and excellent proofreading skills necessary.
- Ability to work on a multitude of projects simultaneously, set priorities and meet deadlines.
- Ability to adapt to changing priorities.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office.
- Knowledge of, or interest in, food banking industry and needs of our hungry neighbors.
