Camp and Specialty Programs Counselor (Seasonal)

Since Brookfield Zoo opened its doors to the public in 1934, the Chicago Zoological Society has had a legacy of educating the public about environmental conservation. The Conservation, Education and Training (CET) staff at Brookfield Zoo is continuing the tradition by incorporating an innovative learning strategy to create a variety of programs for students, parents, teachers, and other community conservationists. Some of these programs include Zoo Camp which provides opportunities for participants to explore and learn about what it takes to care for our resident animals while enjoying games, songs, and even helping out the keepers by making enrichment treats for animals. Sleepover Safaris may take advantage of exhibits being open late, learn how to make behavioral enrichments for animals and wake up the next morning to breakfast and morning hike to see their behavioral enrichment activities given to resident animals.

As part of the CET team, the Camp & Specialty Programs Counselor is responsible for providing this top-quality programming to participants creating memorable guest experiences and inspiring conservation leadership. You will make use of your prior experience working with children in an educational setting to teach a variety of camp and specialty program topics and themes through techniques, including investigation, exploration and instruction. These programs include, but are not limited to, Zoo Camp, Safari Sleepovers, Kid's Clubs, and Mini Camps. You will supervise the program participants throughout the park during all program activities and zoo tours, maintaining a minimum 1:10 staff to child ratio at all times. You will demonstrate your positive attitude and be a positive role model as you assist participants with all activities, games, and projects that relate to the designated program themes. In order to successfully create a fun and positive learning environment for program participants including school-aged children, you will interact on a daily basis with parents and guardians of program participants and make certain daily supplies are organized for activities that include free play, arts and crafts, snack time, and games. Pre-school camp is for children 4 and 5-years old, school-age camp is for children in grades K-5, and Zoo Lab is for middle school children in 6th - 8th grades.

Position Requirements and Specifications
Camp programs run from June through August. The work schedule for this position is generally Monday through Friday, 7 to 8 hours per day. The work schedule for Safari Sleepovers is generally overnight from Friday evening into Saturday morning. Schedules are based on the needs of the operation. Incumbent may be scheduled to work non-standard hours including evenings, holidays, overnights, and weekends. This position also requires the availability to work the weeks that summer Zoo Camp is in session as well as attend all required trainings in the weeks prior to camp starting. This is a temporary (seasonal) position. The starting wage for this position is $ 12.25 per hour.

The requirements for this position include:



  • High School diploma or (GED) equivalent required.

  • Must be at least 18 years of age as required by the American Camp Association Guidelines.

  • Minimum 3 months working with children in an educational setting, e.g., day care, camp, student teaching, school, park district, or cultural institution, required.

  • Strong organizational and communication skills required.

  • Must be an energetic and flexible team player and able to work in a fast-paced environment.

  • Must have a genuine interest in nature and animals.

  • Must have excellent customer service skills and/or demonstrated ability to work with guests effectively.

  • Experience and/or ability to work and interact effectively with a diverse, multicultural audience.

The desirable/preferred qualifications include:



  • Minimum one year of college or equivalent combination of training and experience preferred, including coursework in education, biological sciences, communication or other directly related field or subjects, such as public speaking, interpretation, theater, or art and interpretation.

  • Experience in a zoo, aquarium, museum, nature center, or art studio environment a plus.

  • Multilingual ability, Spanish fluency a plus.


Additional Information
This requisition is to actively recruit for positions that are anticipated to have start dates during the months of March/April/May 2014 for Overnights and Zoo Camp.
