Principal Controls Systems Engineer/Group Leader
UChicago Argonne, LLC operates Argonne National Laboratory, a scientific and engineering research institution, on behalf of the U.S. Department of Energy. We have the following position available in Lemont, IL: Principal Controls Systems Engineer/Group Leader: Provide electrical engineering leadership and support for design, analysis, fabrication, and testing of digital control systems for Advanced Photon Source (APS) accelerators and associated subsystems. Manage Controls Group projects to maintain and upgrade APS accelerator control systems. Supervise approximately 20 staff consisting of engineers, engineering specialists, technicians, and student co-ops, develop and manage the Controls Group’s budgets and effort, provide project leadership involving collaboration with other APS groups/divisions, Department of Energy (DOE) facilities, and accelerator control systems, and generate reports and make presentations concerning project status. Approx. 2% travel, to other labs and conferences. This position requires a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related and 8 years of experience in engineering management. Must have 3 years of experience with synchrotron accelerator and storage ring controls systems operations, development, or construction. Also must have experience with: EPICS software, including its application to timing and digital control systems, power supply control, RF control, vacuum control, diagnostic systems, and plant control; EPICS input/output controllers (IOCs), including their application to accelerator technical systems and hardware and their use by high level systems, including specialized user interfaces, automated sequencing, archivers, and alarm handlers; computer networks and network communication to IOCs and accelerator technical hardware, including Channel Access, TCP/IP, UDP and Modbus protocols; real-time distributed control systems, and digital control system design and fabrication; making system implementation decisions regarding the optimum boundaries between hardware and software for control systems; control systems for electron accelerators and systems, including LINAC, booster and storage ring components; and project management, staff management and work planning, including planning, budgeting, and scheduling for a group, assigning work, appraising performance and providing career development opportunities for group staff, serving as a liaison with other groups, units, or divisions, and reporting progress and status to management.
