Nursing Assistant - Medical Observation Unit (.6 Wknd, Days)

General Summary of Position Responsibility:

Under the direction of a Registered Nurse this position cares for medical/surgical patients from infancy to adolescence and for young adults whose diagnosis, treatment, stabilization and discharge can be reasonably expected within a twenty-four (24) hour period. The common admitting diagnoses for the MOU are asthma, croup/brochiolitis/respiratory infection, dehydration, fever, closed head injury, ingestion, local infection, seizures, allergic reactions, headache, abdominal pain, prolonged observation post-sedation, psycho-social needs

Essential Job Functions:

1. Direct patient care: assists with the following tasks under the direction of an RN:

  • Orienting families to the unit/hospital
  • Vital signs measurement per unit policy
  • Ambulating patient
  • Patient positioning
  • Range of motion
  • Skin care/bathing/hair care
  • Bed making
  • Intake and output measures
  • Documentation of patient data per unit policy
  • Emptying fluid collection containers as specified in unit policy
  • Weighing patients
  • Urine/nasogastric drainage testing
  • Glucose testing
  • Hemocult testing
  • Hemacue
  • Filling out menus
  • PO feeding
  • Set up and priming of NG/OG feeds per unit policy
  • Oral care of extubated patients
  • Bulb suctioning
  • Oral suctioning with yankauer
  • Assisting with procedures assisting with intra hospital transport
  • Holding patients
  • Providing comfort measures
  • Assists in the retrieval and delivery of medications and pharmaceutical products that are dispensed from the Pharmacy to the appropriate patient care providers in a timely manner.

2. Stocking and maintenance: Changing needle boxes when 2/3 full

  • Distributing linen for parents
  • Setting up for admissions
  • Breaking down rooms after discharge
  • Distribution of med supply boxes, IV tubing, IV fluid
  • Replacing canisters, oxygen tubing, and nebulizers per protocol
  • Obtaining unit supplies
  • Returning unused supplies/equipment from patient room and treatment room charge items to central area designated by unit.

3. Clerical:

  • Entering orders for lab, diet into CHIP
  • Assisting with sending labs
  • Phone calling/paging as directed
  • Unit clerk duties as assigned

4. Cleaning:

  • Keeping unit orderly
  • Cleaning equipment and toys
  • Checking and recording refrigerator temperatures
  • Checking breast milk refrigerator for expired breast milk or breast milk for patients that have been discharged

5. Service Performance:

  • Performs job functions adhering to service principles with customer service focus of innovation, service excellence and teamwork to provide the highest quality care and service to our patients, families, co-workers and others.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Required Skills

Job Requirements:

1. High school diploma/GED. Requires Certified Nursing Assistant with IDPH certification or current enrollment in a RN nursing program with completion of a nursing fundamentals course.

2. Must be able to safely immobilize children if necessary and be able to move equipment and patients. Must be able to respond quickly to patient care situations.

3. Must be able to effectively communicate with patients/families, physicians, and patient care staff, and meet professional image and communication standards.

4. Bilingual ability preferred.

Required Experience

At least one year of NA work experience in an acute setting strongly preferred.
