Manager; Phlebotomy Services
General Summary of Position Responsibility:
This position is responsible for developing, implementing, maintaining, and monitoring all specimen collection systems, policies and procedures. This includes supervision of personnel at the hospital and satellite locations and oversight of patien flow, service and quality. Provides support to leaders and staff in developing efficient specimen procurement systems. Provides administrative and technical support to staff, and acts as liaison to Medical Staff and families. Maintain excellent public relations for all laboratory services. Provides a timely communication link between staff and leadership. Actively supports the hospitals continuous quality improvement and customer service goals through the development of effective systems and the education of staff and customer base.
Area Specific Job Accountabilities:
- Develops and implements an effective ongoing training/education program with focus on service excellence, pain management, and age specific needs. Develops policies, procedures and competencies for the department to support system changes.
- Provides direct supervision for phlebotomy staff and assures adequate coverage to minimize patient waiting time and maximize quality of work.
- Provides direction for problem solving and quality assurance relative to procurement of specimens and patient satisfaction.
- Works to challenge and develop personnel through continuing education and delegation of special projects so they might achieve their personal best.
- Assures effective communication with our customer base (physicians, parents, patients, and other staff members).
- Promotes professional environment, including emphasis on cleanliness and safety.
- Works with Director and other managers to provide technical and administrative assistance to off-site collection facilities for determining courier needs, personnel staffing and training. Acts as a liaison for integrating all specimen collection processes occurring within the Children's network.
- Works closely with the Laboratory Information Specialist to resolve any problems with transmission of test orders, phlebotomy collection lists, handheld computers, label printers, and/or bar coded labels.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Bachelor's degree in Science or related field required; Masters degree in Business or related field is preferred. Proven ability to develop effective systems.
Broad knowledge of clinical pathology usually acquired through at least 5 years of experience.
Proven leadership qualities with at least 3 years of supervisory experience. PBT (ASCP) or equivalent certification.
Excellent communication and leadership skills. Ability to work well in a team environment and with different personalities and educational levels.
Ability to teach and develop communication vehicles. Able to handle a variety of responsibilities simultaneously and without constant direction.
