AREA OF RESPONSIBILITY:
To assist in the management of all portfolios related to the property-casualty insurance side of Allstate's business, which totals over $30 billion.
The assets managed under this position are comprised of taxable fixed income, tax-exempt municipal securities, real estate, hedge funds, and equities. This role will have the responsibility of utilizing and directing the research to develop strategies that are customized to optimize the risk and return performance for the related stakeholders. This position will work closely with the Senior Portfolio Manager (Sr. PM) for the stakeholders and interact closely with the Finance areas to ensure all objectives and constraints are incorporated into management decisions. This position will also work closely and directly with the Asset Management area to ensure the analysis is done with accuracy and consistency. This position has the responsibility, in collaboration with the Sr. PM, of directing the trading and asset allocation decisions with this portfolio.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assist in the strategy development and analysis related to the management of the portfolio;
- Take responsibility for the strategy, management and Executive Committee reporting for all subsidiaries of Allstate Protection;
- Work closely with Asset Management on the following: implementation of all strategies, changing asset allocation for risk or return objectives, communicating the objectives and constraints of each stakeholder, and getting market data and views used in all strategy decisions;
- Work closely with our Risk Management and Analytics group on the following: portfolio risk analysis, portfolio optimization analysis, setting of benchmarks for investment performance, and any proposed changes to policy that need to be tested through our risk systems;
- Work closely with our Investment Finance area on: strategic and operating plan development, assisting in creation of Investment Committee and Board reporting, testing of new strategies to assess financial impacts, cash management, and management of cash flows;
- Work closely with Life Finance group on: all asset related inputs to cash flow and capital modeling, preparation of all rating agency and regulator reports related to investment risk, and advising on work related to risk metrics;
- Establish, communicate, and implement investment strategies based on market outlook and client objectives;
- Assist the Sr. PM in developing portfolio research processes which enhance the research value-add components in investment decisions;
- Work proactively with all asset classes to optimize investment decisions by effectively leveraging in-house expertise;
- Assist in the preparation of internal presentations and memoranda required for communication meetings, business planning, and portfolio strategy mandates;
- Assure on-going compliance with all internal governance and policy requirements involving assigned portfolio.
CHALLENGES WITHIN THE FIRST 12 MONTHS:
The most significant challenges for the Portfolio Manager for the first 12 months are anticipated to include:
- Learning the organization, culture and processes, including client(s) portfolio requirements and investment objectives;
- Gaining the respect of peers and colleagues within the asset group and across Allstate Investments; and
- Developing sufficient knowledge of current portfolio holdings to preserve strong financial performance and seek attractive investment opportunities.
Qualification
PROFESSIONAL BACKGROUND:
7+ years of portfolio research and/or portfolio management experience required. Fixed income, real estate, and equity market knowledge and some experience in fixed income trading is also highly desired. Knowledge of, or prior experience working in, property and casualty insurance is a plus.
SKILLS REQUIRED:
- Strategic thought leader with demonstrated ability to incorporate macro outlooks and trends into day-to-day portfolio decisions;
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize work, meet deadlines, and achieve results independently and as part of a team;
- Solid knowledge and training in investment markets and portfolio management;
- Excellent oral and written communication skills;
- Strong inter-personal relations, who can establish and maintain close relationships numerous and diverse areas of the organization;
- Effective at working across asset classes in a team-oriented, performance based environment;
- Proven people management and talent development experience;
- Strong working knowledge of portfolio management tools and analytic techniques; and
- Strong quantitative skills related to portfolio strategy and analysis.
EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND:
Bachelor's Degree required. MBA and CFA highly preferred.
