Role synopsis Refining Technology provides the technical expertise and support to the refineries operated by the BP Group. The New Technology Group within Refining Technology is based in Naperville, IL.

New Technology's purpose is to generate, develop and implement new value options for the worldwide refining business. Advanced Refining is a major element of the New Technology activity and has recently undergone a significant expansion in both people and experimental facilities.

We have openings for up to two pilot plant / laboratory technician in the Advanced Refining Group to help commission, operate and maintain pilot plant, laboratory and characterization facilities. This is a good opportunities for open minded and ambitious individuals to be part of a significant new initiative generating significant value for the business.

Key accountabilities Accountabilities:

The primary roles and responsibilities will include: Actively participating in safety reviews and task hazard assessments for the equipment to be operated and all team HSSE related activities. Operate pilot plants, laboratory test equipment and analytical instrumentation as assigned, including working with high boiling materials. Perform laboratory and pilot plant testing as directed by the project leader(s). Collect and analyze data for accuracy and consistency from operations. Participate in the design of new experimental equipment and experimental plans. Direct and take part in the maintenance and modifications of the experimental equipment. Communicate with the team leader and the team all issues related to unit operation. Contribute ideas, observations, recommendations, and solutions to unit operations. Handling of vacuum residuum, heavy oil, tar, asphalt, and bitumen samples; including transfer of samples, introduction of samples into analytical instrumentation, blending of samples, blending of additives into samples, and clean-up of tools and transfer equipment. Maintain an orderly work area and regular housekeeping of pilot plant or laboratory area. The technician must also be capable of using spreadsheets, databases, and standard computer and control equipment.

A priority of the position is a demonstrated track record of promoting lab safety and active participation and leadership in safety initiatives. The individual must take a proactive approach to environmental and safety situations.

Reporting Relationships

This role will report to the responsible engineer(s) and require a flexible approach to working. The ability to work on a broad range of equipment, interact well with other team members and be multi-task oriented will all be important.

Experience:

Prefer 5+ years experience as a Research Technician with experience in the operation, maintenance and modification of pilot plant and laboratory scale equipment. College degree also preferred.
