Job Description

An extensive background in radio news. Strong on-air communication skills. Background as a reporter. Strong writing skills. Successful anchors demonstrate an ability to think on their feet, ask probing questions, and deal with high-pressure situations with ease and grace. Voice quality is very important. Curiosity and a natural rapport with people on all income and educational levels are important. Must develop story ideas for coverage as well as take directions from the desk. Must have the ability to gather information quickly, conduct interviews and prepare stories for air. Must be a team player.

Required Skills/Experience

KNOWLEDGE & SKILL REQUIREMENTS:

A warm, personable delivery is required, along with excellent diction and pronunciation. Ability to work under pressure and remain calm in confusing and uncertain situations. Strong writing skills are essential. Must have strong critical thinking skills and the ability to ask tough and insightful questions. Fluency with basic computer word processing is required. Ability to operate a range of technical equipment, including audio control boards, and digital recording and playback machines is required. Familiarity with established news practices and ethical standards is essential.



COMPLEXITY OF WORK:

Daily anchoring may be routine by nature, with a fixed schedule and deadlines. However, content changes daily and the anchor must be able to quickly “read up and become expert in any number of different subjects. Anchors and reporters must stay up to date with local, national and international news developments. When assigned as a reporter, must be able to evaluate new situations quickly and decide how best to obtain information while at the same time maintaining a fresh eye for detail and nuance.



INTERNAL/EXTERNAL RELATIONSHIPS:

Anchors must be able to work effectively with managers, producers, editors, writers, technicians and other anchors, while providing leadership during the daypart. They must be able to take direction and maintain trust in the support team behind the scenes. Outside the station, anchors are strongly identified with WBBM Newsradio 780 and must always project a professional and polished image, including a strong interest in individuals and the community.



DECISION-MAKING AUTHORITY:

All work produced by the anchors is subject to review and approval by the Operations Director and the Director of News and Programming. While anchors have some latitude in adjusting elements to fit timing and log requirements, conflicts will be resolved by management.

ACCOUNTABILITY FOR RESULTS:

Anchors are held accountable for all material they broadcast, since they are the final gate-keepers to prevent questionable material from being aired on WBBM Newsradio 780. While on-air performance is reviewed constantly by the Operations Director and Director of News and Programming, quantitative performance marks are issued monthly by the Arbitron ratings service. Unsatisfactory ratings performance may lead to reassignment or termination.
