Allstate Investments LLC manages approximately $100 billion in assets for The Allstate Corporation. Investment performance has consistently provided excess returns for Allstate's customers. Allstate Investments manages diversified portfolios for their customers, investing in a variety of asset types including taxable fixed income, tax exempt fixed income, equities, private securities, commercial mortgages and derivatives to name a few.
Allstate Investments houses all of the functions required to support the investment management business. Functions include traditional Front, Middle and Back Office operations in addition to Technology, Financial Reporting and Resource Management.
SCOPE AND RESPONSIBILITY:
Allstate Investment Technology is in search of a strong leader who will significantly influence and impact the future direction of the organization. Significant changes in staffing, skill composition, project management practices and existing work processes have been implemented over the past two years. A strong leader is needed to drive the definition and implementation of the technology strategy and to continue the evolution of a strong, nimble, empowered culture that is aligned to the right priorities. The Technology organization has an annual budget of approximately $20 million and a staff of 71 along with additional offshore partners. Functions include application development and support, packaged application support, data integration, business warehouse and business intelligence, and various infrastructure support activities.
The individual will work directly with clients to transform their business problems into technology solutions. The goal is to support the clients' efforts to make their business units more effective and efficient and, where required, provide services in connection with the remediation and mitigation of process risk. Experience is also important as it relates to the analysis of specific business requirements for alignment with technology architecture, technology infrastructure design, and vendor selection decisions.

Qualification

The Managing Technology Director (MTD) will be a senior member of the Investment Technology team and report to the Senior Managing Director, who leads the IT organization.
The MTD will be responsible for driving the evolution and implementation of a long-term technology strategy focused on simplification and risk management. The MTD will oversee and drive the execution of key technology projects. This is a very hands-on role that requires active engagement and participation with all strategic projects as well as high levels of interaction with the Senior Managing Director and the Senior Leaders of the asset classes.
The MTD responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  • Define technology strategy to support the changing business and operational model for Allstate Investments.
  • Advise clients on a variety of business process services that help identify, assess, manage and measure the organization's capabilities. Use business process, organizational and technology capabilities and knowledge across several of the following focus areas:
      • Industry (investment management) Application Capabilities
      • Enterprise Data Management/Reference Data Management
      • Financial Accounting and Reporting Operations/Technology
      • Performance Management and Measurement (KPIs, business driver-based metrics)
      • Data Warehousing Features/Functionality
      • Enterprise Technology Expense Reduction
  • Lend specific subject matter knowledge to the design and integration phase of each project, helping to give specificity to the appropriate architecture, data model, and system design and interfacing requirements
  • Team with client technology professionals, and/or third-party strategic alliances to provide implementation of technology solution
  • Act as "agent for change" and a "challenger of the status quo".
BACKGROUND REQUIRED:
The successful candidate will have a Bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering, accounting, finance or a related field (MBA or MS degree preferred)
  • A minimum of 5-7 years of relevant experience at an investment management or asset management firm, or in an insurance company investment area, or as an advisor in the asset management space
  • Demonstrated ability to manage and supervise a technology team through all phases of the technology life cycle, including requirements definition, architecture design, conversion and testing
  • Strong written and verbal communication, presentation, client service and technical writing skills, coupled with a strong interest in further developing and integrating operations with technology skills
  • Proven track record of project delivery
  • Ability and comfort level researching client inquiries and emerging issues, including regulations, industry practices, and new technologies
  • Experience establishing metrics for tracking success of programs and projects.
  • Proven ability to drive organizational change with minimal organization breakage.
  • Proven ability to develop leaders
  • Ability to communicate to all levels of the business and IT organization.
  • Familiarity with variety of technical architectures (application, data, infrastructure).
EDUCATION REQUIRED:
This position requires a Bachelor's degree; although a Master's Degree or MBA in a related field, such as Management Information Systems or Computer Science is preferred. Additionally, a CFA designation is preferred.
